Frequently Asked Questions

What is GRSE?

GRSE started in 2014 as a non-profit organisation running free music workshops open to all women, girls, transwomen and genderqueer persons regardless of age or ability, in a relaxed, informal, supportive learning environment. We think it’s really important to have more women musicians, to inspire other women and girls following them to do the same – making it the norm rather than the exception! We were inspired by the US Rock Camp for Girls, with their mission to build the self-esteem of women and girls through music creation and performance. We reserve places each term for asylum seekers and refugees.

Does GRSE receive funding?

In 2017 we are grateful to have been awarded £1,500 from the Women’s Fund for Scotland, a fund which supports projects for women and girls. This goes towards venue hire equipment purchase, and running workshops in song writing, equipment maintenance, and DJing.

Who teaches the classes?

All our women volunteer tutors are experienced musicians, singers, writers and performers.

Does it cost to attend?

Classes are free, but we are thankful for donations, if you wish.  All donations go towards running costs.

Is there an age limit?

As long as you are over 18 we don’t mind what age you are! Our classes are a mix of all ages.

Do I need previous experience?

No – classes are open to all, regardless of ability – so if you are a complete beginner, or already have a bit of experience, we don’t mind, everyone will learn at their own pace.

Do I need to bring an instrument?

We provide all instruments and amps – but if you would like to bring your own guitar or bass, that would be great as it allows us to teach more people!

What classes are there?

One hour weekly classes in vocals, guitar, drum and bass – and sometimes keyboards, depending on demand. Each term ends with a big jam when you have the opportunity to play students from the other classes. We also have showcase gigs a couple of months after each term ends, so if you have formed a band by then, you have the opportunity to play a gig, if you want to. We often have one off workshops in areas like song-writing, Dj-ing and sound engineering.

When are the classes?

We run two six week terms, Spring (Feb/Mar) and Autumn (Sep/Oct), on Mondays, between 6-9pm.

Where are classes held?

In The Ukranian Community Centre, 14 Royal Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 5AB.

Does the GRSE venue have wheelchair access?

The Ukranian centre has a ramp that can be brought out for wheelchair users so they can get up the front steps, and the toilets are accessible.

How do I sign up?
